The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsClouté means studded, and this Kelly 20 Mini carries palladium studs across the front in a graduated pattern: dense along the base, thinning out as they rise toward the flap. Against black Box calf, polished and smooth, the studs read as points of light.
The construction is Sellier, with sharp edges that keep the studded front flat and taut, and the turn-lock and strap fittings are finished in the same palladium as the studs.
Collector's Insight:
A studded Box Kelly at mini scale pairs the house's most formal leather with a hard-edged decorative detail, and the graduated stud pattern gives the front a movement that a uniform grid would not.
Resale Insight:
Box shows scratches and water marks readily, though light marks can be buffed, and on a studded bag buyers also check that every stud is present and secure.
