The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

In the 30 cm format, Togo gives the Birkin a softer structure while keeping its recognizable proportions. The gold turn-lock gathers the two straps over the flap, and the padlock hangs with its Étain clochette from one of the two rolled handles. Under the flap, the Hermès Paris stamp is foiled in gold to match, and four gold feet, set in two leather strips, protect the base.
Togo is cut from young bull calf. Its fine natural pebble and semi-matte surface resist scratches, and the leather grows more supple with use while the 30 keeps its shape.
Collector's Insight:
On a neutral Togo Birkin, collectors focus on grain consistency, corner wear, handle wear, and how well the body retains its profile. Étain with Gold hardware gives the 30 cm format a warmer contrast than a Palladium pairing.
