The story behind the Kelly

Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.

The joke that became a collector's piece, in its second act. After the transparent 1997 original, Hermès issued the Souvenir de l'Exposition Kelly again in 1998, this time in saturated translucent orange, the house's own signature shade rendered see-through. The 40cm frame, flap, sangles and turn-lock profile of the formal Kelly are faithfully reproduced in vinyl, trading discretion for wit, with the flap printed Souvenir de l'Exposition 1998 and a gold-tone Kelly turn lock closing the front.

This example retains its original brown canvas insert printed with the 1998 exhibition theme, Un Voyage au Pays des Merveilles, visible through the vinyl as part of the design and lending the piece its full documentary context. As with all surviving vinyl Kellys, condition is the story: transparency is unforgiving, and clean examples of a nearly thirty-year-old novelty are genuinely scarce.

Collector's Insight:
The vinyl Kellys were distributed in connection with the house's exhibition circuit rather than through boutique allocation, each year's edition a single fixed run. The 1998 orange is the color edition of the series, and the surviving population only shrinks as vinyl examples degrade. An official Hermès product that comments on its own icon, in the house's own orange.

Resale Insight:
Novelty and archival Hermès pieces trade on cultural significance rather than leather-goods comparables. The orange edition carries the added recognition of the house color, and clean examples with the original printed insert lead the category among collectors, stylists and institutions alike.
