The story behind the Kelly

Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.

Kelly 25 Sellier HSS in Vert Émeraude Shiny Niloticus Crocodile with Bleu Marine Chèvre interior and Brushed Gold hardware. Horseshoe Stamp confirms Special Order specification with client-selected color pairing. Vert Émeraude is a deep, saturated emerald green; on shiny Niloticus the color gains depth across the polished scale surface with darker tones settling between tiles. Bleu Marine interior creates a high-contrast reveal against the green exterior. Brushed Gold hardware has a matte satin finish that reads warmer and less reflective than polished Gold.

Collector's Insight:
HSS exotic Kellys are produced in lower volume than standard exotic allocation. Shiny Niloticus Crocodile in Sellier construction at 25 cm requires flawless scale symmetry across a rigid frame with no margin for error. The Vert Émeraude/Bleu Marine pairing is a client-specified combination not available through standard production.

Resale Insight:
HSS exotic Kelly 25 Selliers are among the least liquid Hermès pieces to source on the secondary market because original owners rarely release them. When they do appear, the Special Order provenance and non-repeatable color combination command significant premiums over standard exotic Kellys.
