Hermès Suede Guide
Doblis, Grizzly, Veau Velours and Teddy editions: materials, construction, linings and documented examples.
Suede changes how a familiar bag receives light. The napped body shifts in tone as the fibers turn, while a smooth handle, flap or piping draws a sharper line. That contrast is part of the design, and a reason to examine the same surface from several angles before deciding whether a dark area is shading or a mark.
Begin with the format, then identify the exterior panels, trim and lining. Doblis, Grizzly and the descriptive phrase veau velours should not be arranged into three official Hermès quality grades. The records cited here do not establish such a hierarchy, a shared internal “exotic protocol” or one construction for every suede bag.

Doblis: read the whole construction
Doblis is a named suede description, not the generic French word for every suede. An all-Doblis exterior, a suede body with smooth trim and a mixed suede-and-exotic configuration are different specifications. Identify the handles, sangles, piping and accessories individually instead of assuming that every smooth component is Swift.
The interior deserves the same attention. Ask for photographs of the side panels, base, pockets and underside of the flap. A lining that feels soft is not automatically nubuck, and an exterior label does not determine whether the bag is leather-lined, textile-lined or has had its lining replaced.
Grizzly: documented small and larger formats
Christie's catalogs a Gris Caillou Grizzly and Étoupe Swift Birkin 25 dated 2021 and a Glycine Grizzly and Nata Swift Birkin 25 dated 2022. Small Grizzly Birkins therefore should not be excluded from the family. These are dated examples, not proof of the first launch season, a reintroduction or the specification of every later bag.
Grizzly and Ghillies are not interchangeable. The former appears in material descriptions; Ghillies refers to a decorative treatment associated with brogue-like perforated trim. A suede panel alone does not make a bag Ghillies. Compare the actual trim and construction in the Ghillies reference.
Linings: a specification, not a universal clock
A leather lining and a chevron textile lining are different constructions, but neither supplies a universal date rule for every Grizzly Birkin. Establishing a production transition requires a defined model scope and reliable dated records, not simply an interior seen on one example.
Record what is actually present and whether it has been replaced. Some legacy descriptions use Doblis and Grizzly together; a filename or product handle is not an independent material certificate. Resolve important ambiguities through the particular bag's documentation rather than inferring tanning methods or lining rules.
Veau Velours: description before hierarchy
The phrase describes suede calfskin. Without a more specific material record, it does not establish a proprietary top tier above Doblis and Grizzly, or an internal manufacturing protocol. A plush appearance can be appealing without serving as a quality grade.
Likewise, an all-suede exterior is a construction detail, not a way to identify every “Velours” bag. The softness of a surface does not determine its maker, production quantity, resale value or the material used inside it.
Mouton shearling and the Teddy family
Shearling retains wool on the skin. The original Teddy Kelly, a hand-warming muff, a modified clutch and later miniature interpretations are distinct objects. Sotheby's dates the Teddy Kelly's debut to 2005; Christie's records a muff dated 2007.
Later designs are documented by 2023. Christie's lists a Chamois Grizzly, Alezan Swift and écru shearling Mini Kelly Pluch. Sotheby's records a Teddy Plush Kelly 35 dated 2023 with Alezan Swift lining. The family therefore cannot be described as a past design unlikely to return, nor should every Teddy be assigned the same lining.
The Teddy reference separates those formats and distinguishes the Kelly Pocket Pluch strap's cardholder from a Kelly Pochette handbag. A later alteration should be disclosed rather than presented as an original factory configuration.

Condition and care
Photograph the nap in consistent light from more than one direction. Inspect compression, polished areas, stains, color variation and wear beneath the flap, around the handles and at the corners. Directional shading can resemble a stain; an actual stain should not be explained away as ordinary nap.
Ask about cleaning, recoloring and repairs. Record trim, lining and included accessories separately. A Pochette, a Mini Kelly and a full-size Birkin need not have the same original packing list.
Hermès' care guidance favors protection from moisture, prolonged light and heat and an appropriate service assessment. Do not assume that a generic suede brush, eraser, waterproofing spray or conditioner is suitable for an archival piece. Avoid tight wrapping and pressure against the nap; a textile lining does not make spills harmless to the rest of the bag.
Collecting without a fixed value ladder
Compare the exact model, size, material combination, condition, accessories and sale context. There is no demonstrated universal order in which Velours must sell above Doblis and Doblis above Grizzly. An unusual construction can be desirable without providing a predictable premium or resale return.
An auction result belongs to one object and one date. Distinguish estimates, asking prices and completed transactions, including whether a reported result includes premiums. A used suede bag can still be a compelling collection piece when its condition is understood and accurately described.
Questions worth asking
Is Grizzly always paired with Swift?
Swift is documented in the two Birkin 25 records cited above. That does not establish a universal pairing for every Grizzly configuration. Identify the trim on the example being offered.
Can the lining authenticate or date a bag by itself?
No. Compare it with the format, complete construction, date attribution and repair history. A universal 2020 lining changeover is not established here.
Does a suede name establish quality or value?
No. The material description is not an official quality grade, production count or price promise. It belongs beside, not in place of, the object's condition and documentation.
What should a buyer request?
Complete exterior and interior photographs, measurements, component-by-component materials, the date attribution, available repair records and an itemized accessory list.
