Hermès Ghillies and Grand Mariage: A Material and Design Reference
Brogued borders, contrasting surfaces and the three-exotic Grand Mariage: how to read each construction accurately.
Ghillies changes the edge of a familiar object. Perforated, scalloped trim traces the Birkin or Kelly, bringing a shoemaker's decorative vocabulary into the bag's construction. The effect can be quiet in a single color or emphatic when suede, canvas or contrasting skins separate the panels.
Grand Mariage is a specific expression within that family: the meeting of three exotic skins. It should not be used as a general name for any three-color or three-material Hermès bag. Understanding that distinction makes the photographs, materials and auction descriptions much easier to read.
From broguing to bag construction
Christie's dates the Ghillies bag to 2012 and connects it to Pierre Hardy's 2011 haute bijouterie work for Hermès. The reference is the decorative perforation associated with Scottish brogues. On the bag, those holes and scalloped edges frame the established silhouette instead of replacing it.
Look first at the perimeter: the upper panels, corners, straps and leather borders. Then look at what lies inside the frame. The same cutwork reads differently against a smooth leather panel, a woven textile or a matte suede surface. This relationship, rather than a universal list of permitted materials, is the useful way to understand the design.
Four ways to read the material combinations

Two blue examples, two different constructions
The Birkin 30 below combines a pale Gris Perle Doblis suede center with Ciel Evercolor trim and Turquoise Clémence body sections, as recorded by JaneFinds. The large suede panel absorbs light; the perforated border gives it an outline. This is a three-leather Grizzly Ghillies, not a Grand Mariage.
The Turquoise Kelly 32 uses Clémence and Swift in the same color. Its contrast is more restrained: the main panel's grain differs from the smoother brogued trim. Color matching does not make the construction single-leather.
Grand Mariage: three exotic skins, precisely named
The photographed JaneFinds Birkin 35 pairs a Gris Éléphant matte Niloticus crocodile body with Etrusque ostrich trim and Ficelle lizard handles and straps. Its Permabrass hardware sits between the warm and cool tones. The appeal is the scale of the textures: broad crocodile scales, irregular ostrich follicles and the much finer lizard pattern.
Not every Grand Mariage uses that crocodile species or palette. Christie's records a Sanguine Birkin 35 dated 2014 in matte alligator, lizard and ostrich; Sotheby's records a Sanguine Kelly 32 in the same three skin categories and year. These documented differences are why “tri-exotic” is useful as a category but insufficient as a complete specification.
Three colors alone do not qualify a bag as Grand Mariage. An all-ostrich Ghillies can be tricolor while remaining one exotic skin; a suede-and-calf combination can use three leathers without belonging to the Grand Mariage group.
Condition: examine the seams between materials
- Perforated borders: inspect the scalloped points, holes and folds for tears, stretching, darkening or lifting. The most exposed corners deserve close photographs.
- Suede: review the nap from more than one angle. Compressed or polished areas behave differently in light from dirt or stains.
- Toile: look for pulled threads, abrasion, discoloration and transfer where it meets the leather. Textile cleaning can affect adjoining materials.
- Exotics: inspect each skin separately, including lizard around tight curves and crocodilian scales near flex points. One sound panel does not establish the condition of the whole bag.
- Prior work: request disclosure of recoloring, replacement trim, re-glazing and structural repairs. Compare detailed photographs with the written description.
Broguing is part of authentication evidence, not a shortcut to a verdict. Consistent perforations cannot authenticate a bag on their own, and ordinary wear should not be confused with counterfeit construction. Materials, stamps, hardware, assembly and provenance need to agree.
Collecting beyond the word “rare”
The strongest choice is a configuration whose design remains legible. On a Ghillies, the border should still articulate the bag; on a Grand Mariage, the three textures should remain distinct. Condition and any restoration therefore matter aesthetically as well as commercially.
Hermès does not publish an edition-by-edition production census. Avoid translating an infrequent sighting into a numerical production claim or an automatic premium. Compare like with like: model, size, exact materials, palette, hardware, condition and documentation. Accessories contribute to completeness but do not prove authenticity.
