Hermès Miniature Kelly Sterling Silver Chaîne d'Ancre Strap
A Kelly cast whole in solid sterling silver. Not a leather bag with metal fittings but the entire silhouette struck in 0.925 and polished to a mirror, the trapezoidal body, the arched handle, the sangles and turn-lock all rendered in precious metal, so the object reads first as a piece of antique silver and only second as the most recognizable bag in the world shrunk to the palm. It came from Hermès' silversmiths rather than its leather ateliers, which places it with the maison's objets and haute bijouterie rather than its handbags.
It is fully functional. The turn-lock lifts and folds exactly as the full-size closure does, the lower body is hinged and opens, and the miniature interior takes the essentials. A removable Chaîne d'Ancre strap, the house's anchor-chain motif, also worked in sterling, clips to the handle for shoulder or crossbody wear and detaches to return the piece to pure object.
Hermès produced it in the 1990s and has not returned to it. Because the silhouette is rigid and the surface is a mirror, condition on a silver Kelly is read differently than on leather: there is no patina to develop and no refinishing to hide handling, so what the polish shows is what the piece has lived through.

Collector's Insight: The silver Kelly is a grail in the exact sense: a piece seasoned collectors pursue regardless of price and may see once. Christie's, offering one in December 2023, described the sterling Kelly as among the rarest pieces the house has ever created and noted it had not crossed their block since 2016, a seven-year gap that is the clearest measure of how infrequently these surface. That sale placed it in the same estimate band as the Kelly 35 Himalaya offered alongside it.
Resale Insight: This trades outside the handbag market entirely, valued as a rare Hermès objet in precious metal where supply is counted in individual appearances rather than production runs. There is no comparable set to average against, so each appearance effectively sets its own reference, and the buyer is a collector assembling the objects that define the maison rather than the ones that carry it. Availability outside the auction cycle, with the sterling strap and box, is itself part of what is on offer here.
