Backpacks carry global associations of youth, freedom, and adventure—qualities that resonate deeply with the Hermès lifestyle. In 1997, Hermès reimagined their iconic Kelly as a playful yet functional backpack: the Kelly à Dos, affectionately known as the Kelly Ado. The term translates literally to “Kelly Backpack,” but also carries a wink of wordplay, as ado means “teenager” in French—an intentional nod to the bag’s spirited energy.
The original Kelly Ados were produced in two sizes: the 20cm mini and the 28cm. The 28cm versions featured a top handle with Amazone canvas straps, blending elegance with sport, while the mini 20cm skipped the handle entirely and opted for slim all-leather straps. While most examples were made in Retourne construction, rare Sellier Kelly Ados were crafted in Box leather and appear in an unusual 22cm size with both top handle and leather straps—a highly collectible configuration today.

Limited Editions & Exotic Variations
Hermès, ever the innovator, produced Kelly Ados in striking Limited Editions—crafted in Vibrato, Denim, Toile canvas, and even Amazonia rubber. Exotic skins elevated the line further: 20cm Ados can be found in Ostrich and shiny Crocodile, while the 28cm versions were primarily offered in matte Alligator. These rare exotics underscore Hermès’ ability to blend youthful playfulness with the highest level of material mastery.
The Kelly Ado II (2018–Present)
After being discontinued in 2001, the Kelly Ado was reintroduced in 2018 in a refreshed 22cm size. Dubbed the Kelly Ado II, this modern iteration forgoes the top handle and comes with either canvas or leather straps. Available in supple Clemence or Evercolor leather, the Ado II has also been seen in exceptionally rare Matte Alligator. Its versatility and contemporary design have made it a rising star among collectors, with secondary market values climbing as availability remains limited.
Beyond the Kelly Ado
The backpack experiment extended beyond the Kelly. Hermès also created the Bolide Ado, a practical reinterpretation of the iconic Bolide. Though rumors persist of a Birkin Ado, these examples are thought to be one-off custom creations rather than official releases. Additionally, the versatile Kelly Danse—famed for its six different configurations—can be worn as a backpack, though this is perhaps the least common styling.

Collector’s Insight
Hermès backpacks, especially the Kelly Ado and Kelly Ado II, embody a rare convergence of utility and luxury. While Hermès has traditionally leaned toward handbags and structured totes, the introduction of these designs demonstrates the maison’s ability to adapt to modern lifestyles. For collectors, pristine or exotic examples—particularly Sellier constructions and limited runs—offer both functional versatility and strong investment potential.
