The Verrou bag is one of the oldest designs in
Hermès’ archives; it’s earliest examples date back to the 1930’s. The distinct lock is inspired by those in horse stables, and has strong Art Deco lines that draws from its era. The Verrou, which means lock in French, has been produced sporadically throughout its near century of existence. This example from the beginning of the 21st century is done in smooth Box Nepal leather which has been painted with a graphic design inspired by the art of Pierro Fonasetti. The windows are a direct reference to the windows of the
Hermès flagship on the Rue Saint Honore in Paris, placed next to a large stable door equipped with the palladium Verrou lock, a reference to the House’ equestrian heritage. The interior is done in Mauve Pale Agneau Lambskin leather, the softest leather
Hermès produces. At twenty years old, it has been given a second life, though still so young compared to some of her predecessors.
