Hermès Kelly Pochette Noir Box Calf Gold Hardware

Sale price$23,950.00 USD

Hermès Kelly Pochette Noir Box Calf Gold Hardware

A Kelly Pochette executed in Noir Box Calf, the original Kelly leather and one of the oldest active leathers in the Hermès canon. Box Calf is vegetable-tanned, hand-polished, and produces a tight, semi-gloss surface with a structured hand. In Noir the leather reads near-lacquer in direct light and matte at angle, with the seam architecture of the Kelly silhouette visible in clean relief. Gold hardware reads warm against the deep black, anchoring the composition without contrast aggression.

The Kelly Pochette is the clutch derivative of the Kelly, retaining the turn-lock closure and single top handle in a flat, envelope-adjacent format. Box Calf in this size is comparatively scarce; current Hermès production allocates the leather to limited annual runs, and Box Kelly Pochettes appear infrequently relative to Swift or Epsom variants. The leather develops patina with use, with corner darkening preceding broader surface mellowing across the lifecycle.

Collector's Insight:
Box Calf is the original Kelly leather; the 1956 piece presented to Grace Kelly was constructed in Box. The leather's vegetable-tannage and hand-polish process produces a structured hand and a surface that takes patina rather than resisting it, making each piece's lifecycle visually distinct. Current Hermès production allocates Box Calf to limited runs, and Kelly Pochettes in Box appear infrequently relative to the smooth-leather Swift or Epsom variants that dominate the Pochette catalog. Box Calf is condition-sensitive to water spotting, which is permanent and visible against the dark surface.

Resale Insight:
Box Calf Kelly Pochettes hold strong secondary-market positioning, anchored by the leather's heritage status and constrained current production. Noir specifically commands the broadest collector demand within the color spectrum due to styling versatility and the leather's near-lacquer presentation in dark colorways. Resale pricing varies meaningfully with condition; pristine examples free of water spots, scratches, and corner abrasion command notable premiums over those showing the patina that Box characteristically develops. Box pieces with provenance documentation perform incrementally above those without.
