The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThe three work as one palette rather than competing, and Epsom's pressed grain holds each color evenly.
Inside, the lining is Bleu Saphir lambskin, a hidden fourth color that appears only when the bag opens. Sellier construction keeps the edges sharp, and palladium hardware cools the warm Gold body.
Collector's Insight:
Every extra color on a Mini Kelly adds cutting and assembly work, and a contrast lining like this one adds a detail most versions lack.
Resale Insight:
On a multicolor Mini Kelly, buyers check the pale Nata sangles for marks and color transfer, along with the corners and handle.
