Named leathers, surface finishes and archive imagery, with documented introduction dates where available.
Editorial illustration. The archive details below support comparison, not laboratory colour matching or stand-alone authentication.
Read a material description in layers: hide family, named leather, surface treatment and colour. Those layers shape the appearance and use of the finished bag, but one does not substitute for another. Barenia is a leather, for example, while Gold and Fauve are colour names.
This is a selective reference rather than a complete taxonomy or a live production catalogue. The pictured bag details retain their JaneFinds archive attributions; broad or unresolved swatch labels are identified as such. Scale, lighting and wear vary between images.
Production and availability: a dated example establishes that a configuration existed by that date. It does not establish uninterrupted production, a worldwide Special Order offer or a permanent discontinuation. Availability and price should be confirmed for the actual item rather than inferred from a “current,” “returned” or rarity badge.
Grained calfskin and bovine leathers
Grain, suppleness and the whole construction
Veau TogoHermès dates it to 1997Drummed calfskin with a round, irregular grain and sometimes visible veins. It becomes more supple with use. Compare weight and structure on the same bag format rather than assuming every Togo is lighter than Clémence.
Taurillon ClémenceHermès dates it to 1992Hermès describes a drummed leather with a generous, irregular grain and a yielding hand. Its semi-matte surface and increasing suppleness should be assessed with the bag's lining, construction and use.
FjordGrained archive materialThe pictured archive example shows a broad grain and visible veining. Assess the actual weight and surface condition; neither waterproofness nor a reason for changes in production is established by the material name.
Taurillon NovilloNamed grained leatherRetain Novillo as the material attribution rather than substituting Togo because the grain looks similar. The archive image illustrates one example, not a verified launch date or universal durability ranking.
Swatch pending
Taurillon MauriceNamed grained leatherRecord the exact material in the item's documentation and assess grain, suppleness and structure together. No fixed production schedule or blanket superiority to Clémence is asserted here.
NegondaHermès dates it to 2002Hermès describes a shrinking treatment before tanning that accentuates the grain. Its Garden Party reference records 2002, not 2007, as the first appearance. A leather's introduction does not date every bag made from it.
Veau EpsomHermès dates it to 2004A regular printed grain and firm hand. Epsom is not the only Hermès leather with an applied grain, nor does it dictate a single bag construction. Examine corners, edges and wear on the actual piece.
EvergrainHermès dates it to 2004Hermès describes a fine, regular printed grain and satiny feel. Its Harnacheur record documents the leather beyond older archive pieces. It should not be described as a coarse natural grain or a waterproof calfskin.
EvercolorHermès dates it to 2012A small printed grain and supple character. Evercolor, Evergrain and Evercalf are distinct names, not interchangeable descriptions of the same leather.
Veau MadameNamed fine-grain materialThe fine surface and defined outline of the pictured Sellier bag illustrate one Madame configuration. Record the finish separately rather than extending a particular edition's materials to every example.
Vachette CountryDocumented Garden Party examplesChristie's records Country leather on a Garden Party 36 dated 2018. The name does not establish an exclusive hide-sex rule, a complete colour allocation or a source farm.
Grain d'HArchive material labelPreserve the exact wording when supported by an object's record. The letter H in the name does not by itself prove that the leather is embossed with repeating H logos.
Barenia FaubourgHermès dates it to 2016Hermès describes a small printed grain that reproduces a drummed appearance. It is a distinct interpretation of Barenia, with a supple hand and a surface that develops patina and darkens in exposed areas.
Veau SwiftHermès dates it to 2004Almost smooth, with a delicate sheen and a supple hand. Hermès relates its name to Jonathan Swift and its resemblance to Gulliver. The house dates its first appearance to 2004, not 2006.
Veau SikkimIllustrative image, not a Sikkim sampleSikkim is a named material to confirm against the actual object. The retained stock image is decorative, not evidence of its grain, weight, source or authenticity.
Veau JonathanNamed smooth-leather referenceRetain the specific Jonathan attribution rather than substituting Swift. The pictured bag illustrates one recorded configuration; it does not establish the leather's first appearance or production frequency.
Veau VoluptoSmooth archive exampleThe pictured Volupto bag has a smooth surface with visible reflections. Examine handling marks and structure directly rather than assuming that every change from wear improves the leather.
Veau TadelaktSmooth, lustrous archive surfaceStudy the gloss, marks and any changes of finish. A smooth polished surface is not automatically Box Calf. Do not assume that rubbing or polishing will safely remove scratches.
Vache NaturelleNatural appearance is not raw hideA leather with a visible patina character. “Naturelle” does not mean untanned or unprocessed, nor should the name be restricted to black. Record colour, condition and any surface treatment separately.
Vache HunterTrim and structural componentsThe pictured Herbag uses a distinct leather top with a textile body. Identify the material of each component from its record rather than assigning the entire bag one leather name.
Veau BareniaSmooth leather with patina characterDistinguish the leather from the colour of the example. Barenia is not untreated raw hide, and patina is not a guarantee that water marks or scratches will disappear. Compare it separately from printed-grain Barenia Faubourg.
Veau ButlerIllustrative image, not a Butler sampleUse the named material in the actual item's record. The retained stock texture cannot establish a Butler attribution, a first collection date or an internal tanning specification.
Box CalfSellier and Retourne are documentedA smooth surface whose sheen and creasing deserve close examination. Box Kellys exist in both constructions. Gloss does not establish untouched condition, and polishing is not a universal remedy for wear.
Veau MonsieurNamed archive materialThe pictured Sellier Birkin shows the material in a defined construction. Preserve its specific attribution rather than using a glossy appearance to identify all smooth leathers as Box.
Veau SombreroArchive smooth-leather labelConfirm the name from the particular catalogue or material record. The swatch does not establish a launch year, full colour range or exclusive use in one bag family.
Veau ChamonixA distinct smooth-leather nameKeep Chamonix distinct from Box Calf even when comparing matte and polished surfaces. The place name is not evidence that a particular hide originated in that region.
Veau DermaArchive material labelIdentify the material against the individual object's record. An association with a historical model does not establish that the leather was never used elsewhere.
Veau EvercalfDistinct from Evergrain and EvercolorA smooth-leather attribution to preserve in the record. The shared prefix does not make the three materials interchangeable, and a photograph alone may not distinguish every finish.
TroïkaHair-on, not suede or nubuckChristie's describes a 2007 Troika Plume with ponyhair and Evercalf. Preserve the precise object record rather than treating Troïka as an especially fine suede grade or inferring species from appearance alone.
Doblis / Veau VeloursRead the exact material recordDoblis appears in suede descriptions; veau velours is a descriptive suede-calfskin phrase. These terms do not establish an official hierarchy of quality or a universal nubuck lining.
GrizzlySmall formats are documentedChristie's records Grizzly Birkin 25 examples dated 2021 and 2022. Identify suede body, smooth trim and lining individually rather than imposing a fixed size limit or one interior specification.
Vache LiégéeDocumented Birkin and Kelly examplesChristie's records a 2006 Birkin 35 and a 2007 Sellier Kelly 32. Vache Liégée should not be described as primarily a Garden Party material on the basis of this archive.
ArdennesHistorical grained-leather referenceRead the grain and structure with the bag's date and condition. The name alone does not establish the hide's geography, a fixed successor relationship or a last year of production.
Veau GulliverHistorical smooth leatherHermès' Swift note describes Gulliver as no longer in its collections and dates Swift to 2004. This supports the relationship without establishing one universal 1999 or 2006 changeover for every object.
CourchevelHistorical printed-grain nameRetain the named leather when comparing it with Epsom. Hermès dates Epsom to 2004; a general succession story cannot date a particular Courchevel bag.
Fine Grain CalfskinInsufficiently specific archive labelThis describes a surface rather than identifying a unique Hermès leather. No separate 2013 introduction, exclusive small-goods use or colour restriction is established by the swatch.
Veau GrainéBroad grained-calfskin wordingObtain a more specific material attribution where possible. The wording does not establish a two-colour palette or an exclusive place in a succession of leathers.
Veau Grainé LisseArchive label requiring corroborationThe image is retained without asserting a distinct transitional leather between Courchevel and Epsom. That chronology would need a stronger material record.
Chèvre MysoreHermès dates it to the 1990sHermès describes goatskin whose irregular but harmonious grain is developed through boarding. Chèvre does not establish a mountain-goat species, and Mysore is not limited to one bag size.
Chèvre ChamkilaNamed goatskin and separate finishThe Doré archive example illustrates a reflective finish on a named goatskin. Identify the material and surface treatment separately rather than applying an older metallic edition's specification to it.
Chèvre CoromandelDistinct named goatskinKeep Coromandel separate from Mysore. The archive's larger bag illustrates why goatskin should not be assigned a universal compact-format restriction.
VibratoLayered-leather constructionLayers of contrasting leather produce the striped surface. It is not simply a printed colourway, and this reference does not assign every layer a goat species or a permanent production-ending date.
BuffleBuffalo-leather descriptionA hide-family term rather than one universal finish. Record the named treatment where available and do not assume waterproofness or a fixed weight relative to every calfskin.
Buffle SindhuNamed archive materialConfirm the individual configuration. A universal Garden Party-only restriction, exact colour allocation or 2007 introduction is not established by this swatch.
Buffle GalaNamed archive materialThe material should be identified through the object record. Grain appearance cannot establish that a hide is physically unsuitable for every larger bag.
Buffle PondichéryNamed archive materialA place-related name is not a supply-chain certificate. Source geography, first collection and exclusive applications require documentation beyond the archive label.
DalmatienSpotted-surface archive referenceRecord the exact leather and colour combination. The spotted pattern does not by itself establish a particular dye process, production quantity or the finished object's authenticity.
Crocodile and alligator
Skin identification and finish are separate
Porosus crocodile, Niloticus crocodile and American alligator are distinct skin identifications. Shiny and matte finishes describe their presentation, not a universal quality or value hierarchy. Habitat is not evidence of the origin of the skin on a particular bag.
Porosus LisseShiny crocodileIdentify Crocodylus porosus and the shiny finish separately. Compare the cut, scale arrangement and condition without assuming all Porosus has the smallest scales or the highest price.
Niloticus LisseShiny crocodileA shiny finish on Crocodylus niloticus. Niloticus is not automatically Himalaya; a coloured shiny example and a pale matte treatment need distinct descriptions.
Alligator LisseShiny American alligatorAlligator mississippiensis is separate from crocodile. The pictured Mini Kelly also illustrates why the material should not be restricted to Birkin 25 or small leather goods.
Niloticus MatMatte-finish referenceThe archive image is labelled semi-matte and should not redefine every matte finish. Record the exact description and assess sheen across the complete surface.
Porosus MatMatte-finish referenceMatte and semi-matte catalogue descriptions should remain distinct where specified. Finish does not establish untreated skin, waterproofness or a guaranteed collector premium.
Alligator MatMatte American alligatorA finished surface, not proof that alligator is naturally matte. Compare areas of repeated contact, scale edges and overall sheen when describing condition.
Autruche / OstrichSkin and object are separate identificationsThe quill-follicle pattern is a material feature, not proof of Hermès authorship. Examine the finish and condition. A reported local Special Order offer should not become a universal 2025 exclusion or 2026 return rule.
Lizard
Named skin, finish and exact format
Lézard LisseShiny lizardNiloticus and Salvator are distinct identifications. Preserve the documented skin name where available; a small scale pattern alone cannot establish species, geographic origin or manufacture.
Lézard OmbréDocumented Salvator examplesChristie's records an Ombré Salvator Birkin 25 dated 2007. That object supports existence by the date, not a complete first-season chronology. A gradient alone cannot establish dye penetration or authenticity.
Care and authentication: real skin, raised texture, scent or a material stamp cannot independently authenticate a bag. Consult the Authentication Guide and Care Guide. For international movement, check the species, route and transaction requirements; Hermès' manufacturing guidance distinguishes precious-material paperwork from ordinary purchase documentation.
