The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThe Teddy Kelly sets panels of plush mouton shearling into the Kelly's structure, trading smooth leather for a soft, textured surface. This example works in three materials: Chamois Doblis suede, a beige-tan suede calfskin, paired with Swift in the Grizzly manner; Alezan Swift, a chestnut smooth leather that frames the bag; and Ecru mouton shearling.
The three tones move from warm tan to chestnut to off-white, and palladium hardware adds a cool point against them. At Kelly 20 scale the shearling reads as texture rather than bulk.
Styled with: Hermès Kelly Pocket Teddy 18 Belt, sold separately.
Collector's Insight:
The Teddy Kelly appears as a seasonal edition rather than regular production, in a handful of colorways, and it is one of the few Kellys built around shearling.
Resale Insight:
Shearling is more delicate than smooth leather and sensitive to water and staining, so buyers inspect the mouton for matting and discoloration and the suede for flattened nap.
