The story behind the Constance
In 1967, Jean-Louis Dumas asked a designer to create a bag for Hermès; she named it after her newborn daughter, Constance. A structured shoulder bag defined by its H clasp, which opens on a spring mechanism hidden at each side of the bar and serves as both closure and signature. Produced in Mini (18 cm), standard (24 cm) and Élan (approximately 25 cm); a Micro at approximately 14 cm has appeared in limited production runs.
Discover Hermès Constance BagsRouge H Shiny Niloticus Crocodile with Gold hardware. Rouge H is Hermès's original signature red, created in 1925, a deep burgundy-oxblood that reads darker than contemporary reds. On shiny crocodile, the color gains translucency; light passes into the skin and reflects back, revealing ruby undertones that opaque leather can't produce.
Niloticus (Nile Crocodile, marked with two dots) shows larger, more rectangular scales than Porosus, a bolder pattern that suits the Constance's structured geometry. Gold hardware warms the cool burgundy. The 24cm size holds full wallet and phone; more capacity than the Constance 18 that dominates current production.
Collector's Insight:
Constance 24 in exotic has become quietly scarce; production shifted toward the Constance 18 as mini bags gained momentum. Rouge H in crocodile is a heritage configuration; the color predates trend cycles and pairs across palettes. Niloticus scales provide visual weight that complements the larger format.
Resale Insight:
Heritage colors in exotic Constance (Rouge H, Noir, Vert Foncé) with Gold hardware represent stable positioning within the exotic market. The 24cm size trades below comparable 18cm pieces despite greater utility, presenting value for collectors prioritizing function over micro-bag trends.
