The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsIn Noir the glaze deepens the black, and the American alligator's broad, even tiles sit in tight proportion across the small panels.
Sellier construction gives the Kelly 20 Mini II its rigid form, with externally stitched seams and sharp corners that read especially graphic at this scale, and gold hardware adds a warm counterpoint to the black.
Collector's Insight:
Noir shiny alligator with gold hardware is the classic exotic Kelly specification, and the Mini II carries it at evening scale.
Resale Insight:
On shiny alligator, buyers check the glaze at the corners, the flap edge and the handle, where water marks and scratches show first. Cracked or lifted scales cannot be restored, which is why they weigh more than light surface marks.
