The story behind the Kelly

Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.

Designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier for the Fall 2010 collection, this monochromatic masterpiece represents the avant-garde peak of his tenure at the maison. The entire bag, from the luscious Box Calf leather body to the lock, keys, and packaging, is rendered in absolute black.

The hardware is coated in Black PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition), a technology borrowed from the watch industry to create a finish that is darker and more durable than traditional plating. When paired with the smooth, glossy surface of Box Calf leather, the effect is a seamless, light-absorbing silhouette that feels both vintage and futuristic. This example, from the original 2010 run (Square N), is in Pristine condition, a rare find given the delicate nature of PVD hardware.
