The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsEpsom's pressed grain holds it evenly and gives the Sellier construction its permanent crisp edges and external saddle stitching.
Gold hardware is the single warm note against the cool ground, and the Kelly 25 carries the pale color at the size most often chosen today.
Styled with: Hermès Marguerite Daisy Charm, sold separately
Collector's Insight:
Sellier Kellys are made in smaller numbers than Retourne, and Epsom is the leather the construction favors because its grain never relaxes. A pale gray gives the versatility of Craie or Nata with a cooler, silvery cast.
Resale Insight:
Pale Epsom resists scratches but shows marks and color transfer, so buyers check the front panel, corners and handle first.
