The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsHimalaya is the house's graduated finish on niloticus crocodile, shading from a near-white center out to smoky gray at the edges of each panel. Retourne construction gives the Kelly 25 soft, rounded edges, which let the gradient flow across the body without a hard line.
The matte finish puts nothing between the eye and the shading, and palladium hardware matches the cool gray at the edges.
Collector's Insight:
The Himalaya finish follows each hide, so the shading from pale center to gray edge differs from piece to piece, and in the Kelly 25 it is concentrated into a small frame.
Resale Insight:
The pale center shows marks, color transfer and darkening before the edges do, so buyers check the front panel, the flap edge and the handle first.
