The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThe In & Out puts the inside of the bag on the outside: the front of this Kelly 25 is stitched with line drawings of things one might carry in it, a lemon, a lipstick, a Chaîne d'Ancre chain, keys and a crocodile pouch, drawn in yellow, silver, red and tan thread.
Nata Swift, a soft cream calfskin with almost no grain, gives the drawings a clean ground, and Retourne construction keeps the edges soft and rounded. Palladium hardware matches the silver thread of the chain.
Collector's Insight:
The In & Out turns the Kelly into a small piece of storytelling, drawing the contents of a bag across its own face, and it is one of the house's more playful editions on its most formal shape.
Resale Insight:
Pale Swift shows marks and color transfer readily, so buyers check the stitched front, the corners and the handle first, and look for any pulled threads in the drawing.
