The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsIn addition, the JANEFINDS Cuban Crossbody Chain, or the JANEFINDS Beaded Semi-Precious Crossbody Chain is the perfect accessory for this Hermès Kelly Mini II. These chains are a versatile and stylish option that can be easily attached to the bag's strap hooks, allowing the bag to be worn as a chic crossbody or shoulder bag. These chains add an extra touch of refinement and luxury to the already elegant Kelly Mini II.
Sellier construction produces crisp, defined edges through external stitching. The 20cm Kelly is a scaled format that adjusts the original proportions. Interior is lined in matching Chevre leather with one zip pocket and two slip pockets. Single top handle with detachable shoulder strap.
Collector's Insight:
The Kelly carries the lineage of the original 1930s sac à dépêches, renamed the Kelly in 1956. Sellier construction is produced in smaller quantities than Retourne.
Resale Insight:
The market demand for Kelly bags, particularly in the 20cm size, continues to outpace supply. This specific configuration is a staple for collectors seeking a balance of heritage and contemporary style.
