The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsBox calf is the house's classic smooth calfskin, polished to a tight, glossy surface that shows depth rather than grain, and in Noir the finish gives the small Kelly a formal gleam. With age and handling it takes on the patina Box is known for.
This is the vintage Kelly 20 in Sellier construction, its seams stitched on the outside so every edge stays sharp. The design is Robert Dumas's, from the 1930s: a trapezoid between two triangular gussets, a flap held by side straps that meet at the turn-lock, and a rolled handle on two rings.
Black thread keeps the stitching tonal, leaving the outline to define the bag. It has the original format's fuller proportions, and gold hardware warms the black at the turn-lock, the handle rings and the four feet.

Collector's Insight:
The original Kelly 20 was later replaced by the Kelly 20 Mini II, which has different proportions, so the vintage format is closed supply. Box and Sellier together are the most formal way the small Kelly was made.
Resale Insight:
Box shows scratches and water marks readily, though light marks can be polished, so buyers check the flap edge, corners and handle, and the gold hardware for plating wear.
