The story behind the Birkin

Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

It features a bespoke bi-color configuration: the main body is crafted from Anémone, a vibrant, saturated purple with pink undertones that was first introduced in 2014. The design is grounded by contrasting trim in Gold, the maison's signature camel-tan hue, applied to the rolled handles, sangles, side piping, and clochette. The Gold leather elements feature the brand's traditional white contrast stitching, highlighting the architectural construction of the bag.

The bag is constructed from Togo leather, a grained calfskin prized for its shape retention and resistance to scratching. Accented with Gold hardware, the warm yellow tones harmonize with the Gold leather trim and amplify the richness of the purple body. The interior bears an A stamp, denoting production in 2017. At 30cm, this size offers a balance of capacity and portability, suitable for daily use.

Collector's Insight:
Anémone is widely considered one of the most successful purple pigments in Hermès history due to its vibrancy and versatility. Pairing it with Gold, the quintessential Hermès neutral, creates a sophisticated town-and-country aesthetic that is rarely seen. The Horseshoe Stamp confirms this specific combination was created at the request of a top-tier client, adding significant provenance to the piece.

Resale Insight:
HSS Birkins occupy the top tier of the leather market. While wild color combinations can sometimes be difficult to resell, a pairing that anchors a strong pop color (Anémone) with a universally loved neutral (Gold) is highly desirable. This configuration offers the exclusivity of a custom bag while remaining thoroughly wearable.
