The story behind the HAC

Haut à Courroies: the direct ancestor of the Birkin, made to carry riding boots and a saddle. Hermès' own chronology dates it to around 1900 and credits Émile Hermès with its design. Proportions vary by size and era: a HAC 60 dated 2002 on record is wider than it is tall.

The Haut à Courroies is the bag the Birkin comes from, designed in the 1890s to carry riding saddles and boots. It stands taller and squarer than a Birkin of the same width, with shorter double rolled handles and a higher belted profile.

Étain is a medium pewter gray, cooler than Étoupe, and on Togo's textured grain it holds even with moderate structure. Palladium hardware keeps the neutral cool.

Collector's Insight:
The HAC 40 is made in far smaller numbers than the standard Birkin sizes, and its taller proportions set it apart from the classic shape.

Resale Insight:
Togo forgives light marks, so buyers check the base corners, which carry the weight of a tall bag, and the handles.
