The story behind the HAC
Haut à Courroies: the direct ancestor of the Birkin, made to carry riding boots and a saddle. Hermès' own chronology dates it to around 1900 and credits Émile Hermès with its design. Proportions vary by size and era: a HAC 60 dated 2002 on record is wider than it is tall.
Discover Hermès Birkin HAC Bags"En Selle" means "in the saddle," and this runway edition from the Hermès Fall/Winter 2024 men's collection draws an abstract saddle across the body in three leathers: Togo for the main body, Swift for the seat and skirt contours, and Box for the saddle details, with diamond quilting and stirrup cutouts. All three are Noir, so the motif reads entirely through texture and finish rather than color.
The seams between the leathers follow the curves of a saddle seen from above, a cut closer to leather marquetry than to standard bag assembly. At 50 cm the HAC is built for travel, with double rolled handles and palladium hardware that stays cool against the black.
Collector's Insight:
The Haut à Courroies was created to carry a rider's saddle, and the en Selle closes that circle by putting the saddle on the bag itself. Box's glossy surface gives the strongest contrast against the matte Swift and grained Togo, which is what makes the relief visible in a single color.
Resale Insight:
Runway HAC editions are compared within their own small group rather than against standard HACs. On a patchwork piece, buyers check the seams where the leathers meet and the corners of the Box panels, which show scuffs first.
