The story behind the Constance
In 1967, Jean-Louis Dumas asked a designer to create a bag for Hermès; she named it after her newborn daughter, Constance. A structured shoulder bag defined by its H clasp, which opens on a spring mechanism hidden at each side of the bar and serves as both closure and signature. Produced in Mini (18 cm), standard (24 cm) and Élan (approximately 25 cm); a Micro at approximately 14 cm has appeared in limited production runs.
Discover Hermès Constance BagsOn this Constance 18 the H clasp is also cut from lizard in Tabac, Camel, Sable and Ombré rather than metal, against a Craie Epsom body, a chalky off-white that lets the clasp stand out.
Epsom's pressed grain keeps the small Constance crisp, and the adjustable strap lets it be worn on the shoulder or crossbody.
Collector's Insight:
An exotic H clasp turns the Constance's signature into the focal point of the bag, and the gradient of browns in the lizard gives it a graphic, striped look.
Resale Insight:
Buyers check the lizard clasp for lifting or cracking, the pale Epsom for marks and color transfer at the corners, and that the mirror is present.
