The story behind the HAC

Haut à Courroies: the direct ancestor of the Birkin, made to carry riding boots and a saddle. Hermès' own chronology dates it to around 1900 and credits Émile Hermès with its design. Proportions vary by size and era: a HAC 60 dated 2002 on record is wider than it is tall.

This PM execution scales the format to a compact slung silhouette with the Birkin-derived turn-lock and sangles applied to a vertical body rather than the horizontal Birkin orientation. Horseshoe Special Order designation, with Multico configuration: Noir Togo across the body and Craie Swift on the sangles, producing graphic high-contrast against the dark ground. The integrated adjustable canvas Sangle Amazone strap allows shoulder or crossbody carry, with Palladium hardware throughout.

Collector's Insight:
The HAC à Dos sits in a small subset of Hermès production that combines Birkin design language with non-Birkin formats. HSS designation confirms client specification through the Special Order allocation program, with Multico configuration unavailable through standard production. PM scale concentrates the construction detail across a smaller canvas than the standard HAC à Dos.
