The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsOstrich leather, with its refined quill follicle pattern, has become increasingly scarce, and Hermès has been especially discerning in its use of this exotic hide in recent years. This scarcity underscores the bag’s exclusivity, making it a prized choice for avid Hermès collectors.
Beyond its rarity, ostrich leather is beloved for its soft yet durable nature. It resists wear and develops a gentle sheen over time, allowing each piece to maintain its polished appearance for years to come. When showcased in Hermès’ warm, desert-inspired Terre Cuite shade, the natural texture of the ostrich takes center stage, exemplifying the house’s tradition of blending timeless craftsmanship with thoughtfully sourced materials.
Collector's Insight:
Ostrich production is constrained by raw material scarcity and limited annual output. Allocation within Hermès exotic bag production is among the most selective in the house.
Resale Insight:
The Birkin 30 is among the most consistently traded formats in the resale market. In a durable leather like Ostrich, it is built to be carried regularly rather than saved for occasions.
