Hermès Birkin 30 Lainage Houndstooth Wool and Ébène Togo Palladium Hardware
Hermès Birkin 30 Lainage Houndstooth Wool and Ébène Togo Palladium Hardware
Lainage is Hermès's term for wool, and it appears on the Birkin only in limited runway editions. This one dates to the Jean-Paul Gaultier era, shown in the Fall 2006 Paris collection during his tenure as the house's womenswear designer. The body panels are woven in a fine houndstooth check: an ivory ground carrying black, burgundy, navy and green threads, so the pattern reads as a neutral from across a room and resolves into color up close.
Togo frames the fabric at every point where a bag takes wear. The top band, handles, sangles, flap and corner caps are all leather, with protective base studs underneath, which is how a textile Birkin survives use at all. Palladium hardware keeps the metal cool against the check rather than warming it the way gold would.
The 30 is the working size in the Birkin line, deep enough for a day's carry without the bulk of the 35.

Collector's Insight: Textile Birkins occupy their own narrow lane. Wool cannot be refinished, re-dyed or spa-treated the way leather can, so whatever condition the fabric is in is the condition it stays in, and that alone thins the surviving population of any wool edition. The Gaultier-era fabric bags ran for a single season each and were never repeated, and the houndstooth was not carried into later Lainage releases. The leather corner caps and base studs on this bag are not decorative; they are the reason the check at the lower panels still reads clean.
Resale Insight: A wool Birkin does not price against Togo comparables, because the buyer is acquiring a runway edition rather than a core-catalog configuration. That narrows the audience: collectors who already own leather Birkins and want something the boutique cannot offer them. Pricing therefore rests on the state of the fabric and the completeness of the set rather than on a run of recent sales, and examples surface too infrequently to establish a steady comparable.
