The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsBougainvillea is the saturated pink-red Hermès produces in select cycles, named for the tropical flowering vine and reading as a balanced fuchsia-red that sits between Rose Tyrien's bright pink and Rouge Vif's pure red. On Ostrich (Struthio camelus) the color reads with the leather's characteristic quill-follicle pattern providing tactile interruption to the saturated pigment, where the dimpled texture catches and amplifies color depth in a way smooth leathers cannot. Ostrich is among the most allocation-restricted Hermès leathers, with annual production capped by raw material supply and pulled away entirely in 2025 before returning in the 2026 cycle. Palladium reads cool against the warm saturated ground, producing the temperature contrast that defines the most considered Hermès exotic configurations. Y stamp places production at 2020, with complete export documentation.
Collector's Insight:
Ostrich allocation through the Hermès system is among the most restrictive in the house, with annual production capped by raw material supply. Bougainvillea on Ostrich is a buyer-pulling combination that pairs a saturated color with a textural leather most often produced in neutrals, making this configuration meaningfully scarcer than either characteristic alone.
Resale Insight:
Ostrich Birkins hold strong demand across cycles, with complete export documentation supporting cross-border resale. Bougainvillea pulls active interest from collectors seeking saturated pinks in textural exotic format. Pristine condition with intact quill structure is the highest-value configuration for the leather.
