The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsThe name comes from the storyteller of One Thousand and One Nights. On matte alligator the pigment takes a velvety depth, deeper in the scale channels and lighter on the raised tiles, with the surface absorbing light rather than reflecting it.
The matte finish withstands handling marks better than a shiny glaze, and palladium hardware keeps the saturated color cool. At 25 cm the Birkin carries it in a compact frame.
Collector's Insight:
Saturated pinks on exotic skins are made in small numbers, and Rose Shéhérazade has appeared on matte alligator across several stamp years without ever becoming common.
Resale Insight:
Bright exotics show color change and scuffs more visibly than dark ones, so buyers check the corners, handles and flap edge first; scale damage on alligator cannot be resurfaced.
