The story behind the Birkin

Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

Étrusque is a warm terracotta brown with strong orange undertones, a color that recalls fired clay. On shiny niloticus the pigment varies across the polished scales, darker in the channels between tiles and amber on the raised centers, and the glaze sharpens the shift as the light moves.

Niloticus crocodile carries rounder, less uniform scales than porosus, with natural variation in tile size across the panel. Gold hardware reinforces the warmth of the color, and at 25 cm the Birkin keeps the exotic compact.

Collector's Insight:
Étrusque was a seasonal color and has not been part of the standard palette for several years. Shiny crocodile in a warm earth tone works across a wider range of dress than the jewel-tone exotics, which is its appeal.

Resale Insight:
On shiny crocodile, buyers check the glaze at the corners, the flap edge and the handles for water marks and scratches, which show more readily than on matte.
