The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

This bag carries a 1986 P-in-circle stamp, placing it in the first years of the format's existence, years before the Birkin became the most recognized bag in the world. Veau Doblis is the velvet-finish nubuck, the most tactile surface in the Hermès repertoire, and beige Doblis under gold is as warm as the early catalog gets: a period document as much as a bag.
Interior is lined in Chevre leather with one zip pocket and one open pocket. Signature turn-lock closure, front flap, and sangles complete the configuration.
Collector's Insight:
First-decade Birkins survive mostly in worn condition, and Doblis compounds the difficulty since the nap registers every touch. A Pristine 1986 example is a statistical anomaly of storage and restraint.
Resale Insight:
Early-production Birkins trade on provenance and date stamp as much as configuration, and the 1986 circle-era stamp is the headline here. Demand comes from collectors assembling the format's history.
