The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThe glazed finish catches the light along each row of scales, and the scales run small and even across the front panel.
Sellier construction stitches the seams on the outside and keeps every edge sharp, so the trapezoid holds its line. White topstitching traces the flap, sangle and handle, and the edges are painted brown. The padlock is covered in the same lizard as the clochette, and a detachable lizard shoulder strap with ruthenium clasps takes the bag from hand to shoulder.
Ruthenium is a darker plating than palladium, close to gunmetal, so the hardware stays in the same muted register as the skin instead of contrasting with it.

Collector's Insight:
Lizard skins are narrow, so Hermès favors the material for its smaller formats, the Kelly 25 among them. In Sellier form the outer seams and painted edges stay fully visible, which puts the evenness of the skin and the edge work on show.
Resale Insight:
Buyers compare lizard Kellys on the scales at the corners, the handle and the flap edge, where the skin dries and lifts first.
