The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsPalladium keeps it crisp, where gold would push it toward yellow.
The 30 is the Birkin at day-bag size. The flap drops over two straps that close on the turn-lock, the padlock and two keys ride in a leather clochette, and the two rolled handles carry it by hand or in the crook of the arm. Four palladium feet protect the base.
Togo gives the pale leather a pebbled texture that hides light marks better than a smooth leather would, which is what a cream bag needs. The grain also lets the 30 hold its shape when full without turning stiff.
Collector's Insight:
Pale Birkins are judged on how little they have been handled, so an unworn example with its full set is this specification at its best.
Resale Insight:
On a pale Birkin, buyers look first at the corners, the handle edges and the interior for marks and color transfer.
