The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsOn Box calf it reads almost black in low light and shows its blue in daylight.
The palladium hardware is guilloche: a fine diamond pattern engraved across the turn-lock plate and the strap plates, a technique taken from watchmaking and jewelry. Against the dark, glazed leather the engraving is the brightest thing on the bag.
The construction is the Birkin's own. Two straps close the flap at the turn-lock, the padlock and its two keys hang in a leather clochette, and the rolled handles rise over the 30 body. Box holds a crisp edge along every seam, and its surface deepens with handling.
Collector's Insight:
Guilloche is one of the rarer Hermès hardware finishes, and Box calf is the house's classic smooth leather. This bag carries both in a color that lets the engraving lead.
Resale Insight:
On Box, buyers check the flap, corners and handles for scratches first. Thirteen years after production, this example still has its hardware sealed in plastic.
