The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

Ombré is the lizard's own pattern: the natural banding of the Varanus Salvator skin, rings of cream and charcoal laid down by the animal rather than the dye house, so no two bags repeat and none can be reproduced. Building it demands skins with symmetrical, evenly distributed banding, a selection gate far narrower than any color standard, since the pattern must resolve cleanly across panels that are cut, not printed.
The Birkin 20 Sellier is one of the smallest Birkins, and the construction serves the skin: rigid panels and external saddle stitching hold the scales flat and sharp-edged where a soft build would let the banding fold out of register. Lizard runs finer-scaled and lighter than alligator or crocodile, which suits the 20's proportions, and palladium hardware stays inside the skin's gray register rather than warming it.
Collector's Insight:
The Birkin 20 exists in small numbers, and Ombré narrows it further: the skin-matching requirement means the house produces the combination only when the right skins exist, not on a schedule. The natural gradient draws the collector who wants the exotic to speak quietly, the opposite pole from the saturated brights.
Resale Insight:
Birkin 20s trade at premiums across every material on format scarcity alone, and Ombré sits above solid-color lizard on the strength of the natural pattern. The buyer pool is the established exotic collector who understands lizard's finer scale and lighter build, the same pool that pursues Ombré across the Kelly and Constance formats, where supply is equally thin.
