The story behind the HAC
Haut à Courroies: the direct ancestor of the Birkin, made to carry riding boots and a saddle. Hermès' own chronology dates it to around 1900 and credits Émile Hermès with its design. Proportions vary by size and era: a HAC 60 dated 2002 on record is wider than it is tall.

This 1998 example pairs a Denim canvas body with Naturelle Vache Liégée at the flap, handles, sangles, and corners. Vache Liégée is a pressed cowhide with a distinct raised grain and firm hand, chosen historically for luggage because it holds structure and resists wear better than softer calfskins. In Naturelle it reads warm honey against the indigo twill.
At 50cm this is a genuine travel bag rather than a handbag, taller and deeper than any Birkin, and the canvas body cuts significant weight against all-leather construction at this volume. Gold hardware warms the utilitarian materials.
Collector's Insight:
Canvas-and-leather HACs at 50cm surface rarely, since large-format travel pieces were produced in small numbers and most that survive have been carried hard. Vache Liégée itself has largely left production, which fixes the supply of examples in this material permanently.
Resale Insight:
Large HACs trade to a narrow but committed pool: collectors of the men's universe, and buyers acquiring them as objects rather than daily bags. Condition 4 places this squarely in the honest-vintage tier, where buyers expect visible history and price accordingly rather than paying for presentation.
