The Hermès HAC
Sizes, materials and formats, from smaller archive examples to travel bags and the HAC à Dos.

The Haut à Courroies belongs to Hermès' equestrian and travel history, before the Birkin. The house's published chronology places the design around 1900. Its relationship to later handbags is part of the story, but the HAC is a family worth examining on its own terms.
This selective archive combines JaneFinds examples with documented house and auction references. Measurements use width × height × depth. The nominal size usually refers to width; the HAC is not necessarily taller than it is wide. Nor does the family end at 55 cm: a documented HAC 60 appears below.
The photographs retain their individual JaneFinds archive attributions. An archive example can illustrate a format without establishing total production, a complete color range or present boutique availability. For the broader history, read the story of the Haut à Courroies.
HAC 28
The 28 expresses the HAC vocabulary at a smaller scale. Compare its opening, depth and handle clearance with your belongings and preferred carrying arrangement rather than treating “most wearable” as an objective property.
The archive labels this White Epsom example with a K-square stamp, conventionally corresponding to 2007. That date belongs to the piece, not every HAC 28. A seldom-seen size in one archive does not establish the family's smallest or least-produced configuration.
On light leather, examine corners, handles, edges and lining in consistent light. A precise condition account remains important regardless of how unusual the configuration is.
HAC 32
A handbag-scale HAC can be compared with a Kelly or Birkin of similar nominal width without making the three interchangeable. The opening, handle arrangement and depth may give each a different practical role.
In the pictured Rouge Vif example, ostrich's quill-follicle pattern changes the broad surface. Its color and material describe this bag, not a complete catalog of the format's production.
For a vintage acquisition, prioritize the date attribution, condition and repair record. The presence of surviving examples does not establish uninterrupted production or a fixed resale premium.
HAC 40

A 2021 black Togo HAC 40 at Sotheby's measures 40 × 37 × 24 cm. That bag is wider than it is tall; the model name does not indicate a universal 40 cm height and 30 cm width.
A 1994 Naturelle Ardennes example is cataloged at 40 × 35 × 24 cm. Keep the source and measurement order alongside each specification rather than forcing different records into one table entry.
For practical use, assess the opening, handles, base and weight with a realistic load. Exterior scale does not promise a particular capacity or comfortable shoulder clearance.
Exotic materials
Identify the skin, finish and color separately. Sotheby's independently catalogs a matte black Porosus HAC 40 dated 2021, with its own dimensions and lining. That record supports a particular configuration rather than an exhaustive list of exotic HACs.
The scale of the panels changes how the skin is seen, but does not establish a guaranteed price advantage. Matte is not automatically more valuable than shiny. Compare the exact cut, surface condition, hardware and documentation.
For less familiar skins or mixed-material versions, obtain the particular item's record. A broad model history or a filename cannot independently establish every material attribution.
Textile and wool interpretations
Smooth trim against textile changes the surface rhythm of the bag. Identify the body, trim and lining individually; the canvas name alone does not establish an exclusive development history or a fixed production count.
A runway association also differs from provenance that the exact object was carried in a show. It should not be used to conclude that a design never entered retail.

The archive's Toudou pairs smooth colored leather with softer wool panels. Examine that contrast on its own terms rather than applying a leather-only condition checklist.
Inspect the textile for staining, abrasion, pulls and changes of texture, alongside leather, hardware and structure. A material-specific service assessment is more useful than assuming every mark can be removed or that wool condition alone determines the bag's entire value.
HAC 45
At this scale, weight, handle clearance and access become especially practical questions. Clémence may suit a preference for suppleness, but it is not an objectively preferred leather for every collector or load.
An overnight role depends on what is carried. The 45 cm name does not establish airline cabin-baggage compliance; check the complete loaded dimensions and the carrier's requirements for the actual journey.
Assess the individual bag and its condition instead of inferring current production status or a predictable resale premium from one archive example.
HAC 50

A denim-and-leather travel bag makes the material contrast as important as its scale. Examine fabric, trim and interior, including wear where the surfaces meet and where the loaded bag contacts clothing.
When a legacy description contains a conflicting material or date attribution, compare the actual stamp and available purchase or service records. The name in a filename is not independent corroboration.
Measure the bag and its opening with the intended use in mind. A nominal 50 does not promise a fixed number of days of clothing or a single set of dimensions.
Endless Road

Contrasting panels build a landscape-like composition across the body. Christie's records a Gris Perle Endless Road HAC 50 dated 2018; Sotheby's records a Bleu de Prusse example dated 2019 in Togo, Swift and Clémence. The design is documented in more than one object, rather than a unique one-time encounter.
The Christie's example measures 50 × 40 × 25 cm; Sotheby's gives 50 × 43 × 27 cm for its example. Their dimensions and full material descriptions should travel with their own records. Do not omit Clémence from a configuration that specifically documents it.
Inspect the joins, edges and individual panels, as well as the overall composition. Its visual interest does not depend on an automatic price premium.
HAC 55 and a documented HAC 60
The 55 is substantial, but it is not the largest documented HAC. Christie's catalogs a 2002 HAC 60 in Vache Naturelle measuring 60 × 46 × 28 cm. Its wider-than-tall proportions also show why a universal vertical-shape rule is inappropriate.
A separate JaneFinds toile and Rouge H Box HAC 55 is cataloged as 1981 with a K-circle stamp. The date is useful context, not proof that it is among the oldest surviving examples.
Check base, handles, attachments, lining and corners carefully. Repairs affect how a travel bag can be used. Capacity, current order availability and comparable selling prices should not be inferred from its size alone.
Cargo HAC
Cargo changes exterior organization through additional compartments. Catalog the precise pocket arrangement and supplied accessories rather than reducing every version to a single front patch pocket.
Sotheby's records a 2021 Cargo HAC 40 in Evercalf and toile, with an unlined interior and a cup holder among the accessories. That is a separate configuration, not the material specification of the photographed JaneFinds bag.
Compare like materials, condition and completeness before attributing a price difference to the Cargo name. A newer layout does not guarantee that every example sells above an ordinary HAC 40.
HAC à Dos
The HAC à Dos is a factory-designed interpretation, not an aftermarket conversion of a travel HAC. Hermès describes the PM in Togo with one adjustable Fiber canvas shoulder strap, allowing shoulder, crossbody or on-back carry. It is not a conventional two-padded-strap backpack.
The cited PM measures 7.1 × 11 × 3.1 inches, with a 27.2–49.2 inch strap. The GM in H canvas and Togo measures 10.2 × 14.2 × 4.3 inches, with a 24.4–45.3 inch strap and supple-calfskin lining. These are reference-specific measurements in width × height × depth order.
The GM page also names a Maxi size, so PM and GM should not be treated as an exhaustive current lineup. For any version, check the exact material, strap adjustment, connection points and comfort with a realistic load.

Identify the whole object. Shape, sangles, hardware and marks contribute to identification but are not stand-alone authentication tests. A date stamp supports a year attribution, not complete provenance. Read letter and shape together: modern unframed C conventionally indicates 2018, while C in a square indicates 1999.
Keep the measurements, photographs, material description and available repair and ownership records together. Current availability and selling terms require a specific inquiry; no archive guide establishes production quantities or guarantees a future price.
