The story behind the Kelly Pochette

The Kelly as a small, box-like clutch, with the Kelly flap, straps and turn-lock and a top handle.

Discover Wallets, Clutches, Pochettes

Noir Doblis on the body and flap, with Violet appearing at every interaction point: the interior lining, the sangles, the top handle, and the gussets that flank the body. The bicolor execution stays subtle from the front exterior, with the contrast emerging when the bag opens, when the handle is lifted, or in the side profile where the gusset shows.

Veau Doblis is Hermès' calf suede, finished with a dense, fine nap that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. The matte surface reads softer and more textured than smooth leather. Bicolor Doblis configurations are uncommon in Hermès production. Suede already limits run sizes due to skin selection and nap-direction matching requirements, and the addition of two coordinated colorways raises the production complexity another level. Gold hardware warms both colors, bridging the cool Noir body and the saturated Violet accents.

Collector's Insight:
First-period Kelly Pochettes from the early Gaultier era hold particular significance within the Pochette catalog. The 2004 production window represents a narrow timeframe when Hermès expanded Doblis production and bicolor configurations across the Kelly and Birkin lines, with Pochette-format pieces appearing in numbers significantly smaller than full-size handbags. Bicolor suede specifically is a layered rarity. The material limits production to begin with, and two-tone construction adds another variable to skin selection and dye-lot matching across coordinated colorways.

Resale Insight:
Early-era Kelly Pochettes from Gaultier's tenure trade differently than current production. Provenance and scarcity layer onto the inherent collector positioning of vintage Doblis. Bicolor suede from 2004 is effectively a one-of-few configuration in the secondary market. Survival rates for twenty-plus-year-old suede in Excellent condition are low across the broader Doblis catalog, which establishes a structural premium for examples that have retained surface integrity. Bicolor specifically narrows the comparable sales pool to a degree where pricing operates more on availability than comparables.
