The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThe Kelly 20 Mini II in Ombré Lizard is built from Lizard Salvator (Varanus salvator), and it preserves the natural pigmentation of the reptile rather than dyeing over it. The "Ombré" effect is achieved by symmetrically placing the skin so that the parchment-white belly scales run down the center, fading naturally into the charcoal-gray ring patterns on the flanks.
Constructed in the Sellier style, the rigid, sharp edges of the bag frame the delicate pattern of the lizard scales like a picture frame. The small scale of the Mini Kelly (20cm) serves as the ideal canvas for this material, allowing the natural gradient to be displayed in perfect proportion without requiring multiple skins to be joined. Finished with Palladium Hardware, the cool silver tones blend seamlessly with the monochromatic palette of the skin, creating a jewel-like object that is both organic and architectural.
Collector's Insight:
Ombré sits in the same part of the exotic hierarchy as Himalaya for the same reason: the finish is the skin itself. Tanning requires precise bleaching to lift the yellowing while preserving the natural dark rings. Flawless skin is mandatory; there is no dye to hide imperfections, making this the most unforgiving and exclusive lizard specification available.
Resale Insight:
Contrast and symmetry are what an example is judged on, since no two hides band identically and there is no color to compare against. The audience is the established exotic collector rather than a first-time buyer, and at 20 centimetres the format is the least produced in the Kelly line, so comparable appearances are infrequent.
