The story behind the Kelly Danse
Designed by Jean Paul Gaultier and introduced in 2008, discontinued in 2013 and reintroduced in 2019 as the Kelly Danse II. An adjustable strap lets it be carried as a clutch, on the shoulder, crossbody, at the waist or as a backpack.
This Kelly Danse II adds long leather fringe that falls from the base, hand-laced across the full width with a whipstitch seam visible where fringe meets body. The Kelly turn-lock closes the front flap, and the adjustable flat strap threads through rings at the back to wear it crossbody, on the shoulder, as a backpack or at the waist, or detaches for a clutch.
Marfa Swift, a smooth, fine-grained calfskin with a soft sheen, is supple enough for the fringe to move, and palladium hardware and tonal stitching keep the focus on the leather.
Collector's Insight:
The original Kelly Danse was discontinued in 2013 and returned as the Kelly Danse II in 2019, and the fringe edition is a seasonal version of that reissue.
Resale Insight:
Buyers check each strand of fringe for creasing, tangling and edge wear, since damaged fringe cannot be matched, and the Swift flap for scratches.
