Hermès Kelly 35 Picnic Wicker & Barenia Palladium Hardware

The Picnic Kelly replaces the leather body panels with hand-woven Osier wicker, retaining Barenia at the flap, handle, sangles, and base. Two crafts build one bag: a basket weaver forms the rigid wicker body, then a saddler integrates the leather. Barenia is the uncoated calfskin Hermès developed for saddlery; it absorbs oils from handling and darkens with use, while the wicker stays fixed, so the two materials diverge visibly over years of ownership.

Retourne construction turns the bag during assembly, producing softer, rounded edges. Interior is lined in matching Chèvre with one zip pocket and two slip pockets. Single top handle with detachable shoulder strap. Accompanied by the original Hermès box.

Collector's Insight: The Picnic line began in 2011, when Jean-Paul Gaultier introduced wicker as a structural material in his final Hermès show. Production is capped by the supply of specialist weavers rather than by materials, and the wicker cannot be repaired: any broken strand is permanent, which is why pristine examples thin out every year.

Resale Insight: Picnic Kellys trade in their own lane, to buyers seeking mixed-media construction rather than a traditional configuration. Condition carries disproportionate weight here because there is no restoration path for the weave, and an unused example with its box sits at the top of what the format offers.
