The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsSellier – “boxy, structured, rigid”, The Kelly Sellier has visible topstitching along the side seams and no exterior piping like the Retourne. The corners and edges are “sharper” contributing to a more boxy look. Compared the retourne, the craftsmanship of the Sellier is a little more difficult and requires more steps. The seams are top stitched together and bees wax is applied to the edges, which protects the bag from damage. Due to this method of construction, the Sellier appears larger than a Retourne in the same size. Out of the two styles, the Sellier is more limited.
Sombrero leather, Introduced in 2011, it is made from male calf leather that is smooth and delicate and has a brilliant matte finish. It is known for its skin-like gentle texture and firmness.
Collector's Insight:
The Kelly carries the lineage of the original 1930s sac à dépêches, renamed the Kelly in 1956. Sellier construction is produced in smaller quantities than Retourne.
Resale Insight:
The market demand for Kelly bags, particularly in the 32cm size, continues to outpace supply. This specific configuration is a staple for collectors seeking a balance of heritage and contemporary style.
