Hermès Kelly 32 Sellier Rouge H Waffle Palladium Hardware
The waffle Kelly is embossed with a tight grid of raised square cells across the body, gussets and flap, so light breaks over the surface in small facets instead of sliding across a smooth panel.

The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThe sangles, top handle and shoulder strap are left smooth, which keeps the closure reading clean against the texture. In Rouge H, the house red with a brown undertone, the shadow between the cells deepens the color.
Sellier construction stitches the seams on the outside, so the corners and edges stay sharp and the bag holds a boxy, rigid line. The edges are finished with wax, and the outward seams make a Sellier read larger than a Retourne of the same size. The interior is lined in matching chèvre with one zip pocket and two slip pockets, and the bag carries by the single top handle or the detachable shoulder strap.
Collector's Insight:
The Kelly descends from the sac à dépêches of the 1930s and was formally renamed the Kelly in 1977. Sellier construction takes more steps than Retourne and is produced in smaller quantities, and the waffle relief sets this example apart from the smooth and grained calfskins the model is usually made in.
Resale Insight:
Embossed waffle calfskin is an uncommon leather for the Kelly, so examples come to the secondary market only occasionally.
