The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsToile H canvas body with Noir Swift leather trim, Hermès's classic canvas-and-leather combination dating to the house's equestrian origins. The ecru weave provides texture and lighter weight than all-leather construction; the Swift trim adds structure at edges, handle, sangles, and clochette. Palladium hardware throughout.
Collector's Insight:
Toile H Kellys offer the silhouette at lower weight than leather equivalents. The Kelly 25 Sellier in canvas is less common than larger canvas formats; Sellier construction maintains sharp geometry while the textile lightens the bag.
Resale Insight:
Canvas Kellys trade below all-leather equivalents but have their own collector following: those seeking the silhouette with practical weight reduction. Current-year production in pristine condition represents immediate availability.
