The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsIts Quadrille canvas, with its checkered motif reminiscent of a dance floor or chessboard, creates a bold geometric rhythm softened by the luxurious Sesame Swift leather trim. The structured Sellier silhouette emphasizes sharp lines and refinement, while the Palladium hardware adds a cool, modern contrast. This Kelly is more than a bag, it is a wearable statement of Hermès’ ability to merge tradition with innovative design.
Collector's Insight:
The Quadrille Kelly is one of Hermès’ most unique hybrids, blending woven canvas with fine Swift leather. Its rarity, especially in compact 25cm Sellier form, ensures its place as a coveted standout in any collection.
Resale Insight:
The market demand for Kelly bags, particularly in the 25cm size, continues to outpace supply. This specific configuration is a staple for collectors seeking a balance of heritage and contemporary style.
