The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsPorosus is the saltwater crocodile, recognized by its small, rounded scales and the tight, even grid they form across a panel. Polished with agate stones to a shine, the scales throw light back in sharp points, and in Noir the glaze deepens the black rather than lifting it.
Sellier construction gives the Kelly its most architectural form: seams stitched on the outside, sharp corners and a flap that holds a clean edge. Palladium hardware keeps the turn-lock cool against the lacquered surface.
Collector's Insight:
Shiny porosus is the most formal of the house's crocodile finishes. Combined with Sellier construction and Noir, it is the Kelly in its most classic exotic form.
Resale Insight:
Shiny crocodile shows water marks and scratches more readily than matte, so buyers inspect the glaze at the corners, the flap edge and the handle first. Cracked or lifted porosus scales cannot be restored.
