The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsBleu France is a bright, saturated medium blue drawn from the French flag's tricolor: more vivid than Bleu Jean and brighter than Bleu de Prusse, with high color intensity that stops short of electric or neon. On Swift the pigment absorbs deeply into the fine grain, producing the strongest possible saturation. Swift is the leather Hermès typically selects when a color needs to read at maximum intensity.
Retourné construction assembles the bag with edges rolled inward and seams concealed, producing a softer, rounder silhouette and a lighter carry than Sellier. The format is the more wearable of the two and sits closer to daily-use territory. Palladium hardware holds the blue to its cool register. Z stamp places production at 2021.
Collector's Insight:
Bleu France is a seasonal color Hermès cycles rather than maintains in permanent production. Swift in bright blues is the leather-and-color combination the house allocates most tightly, because Swift's dye absorption is what gives saturated colors their defining intensity. Kelly 25 is the tightest-allocation size in the standard Kelly range and the most requested at retail.
Resale Insight:
Kelly 25 Retourné in statement blues trades at retail-plus when the color is not in current production. Palladium with bright blues moves faster than gold equivalents on the secondary market. Pristine 2021 with full set is the strongest forward-resale profile for this specification.
