Hermès Kelly 25 Retourne Black Togo Palladium Hardware

Retourne construction assembles the Kelly inside out, giving softer, rounded edges and a more relaxed profile than the Sellier's rigid geometry, and Togo's textured grain suits that easier register while resisting scratches in daily wear.

The story behind the Kelly

Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.

Discover Hermès Kelly Bags

Black with palladium is the cool, neutral way to wear the house's most permanent color, and the detachable shoulder strap lets the bag go from hand to shoulder.

Collector's Insight:
The Kelly descends from the 1930s sac à dépêches and took its name from Grace Kelly, whose 1956 photographs with the bag fixed it in popular memory. Black Togo with palladium is its definitive everyday specification.

Resale Insight:
Togo forgives light marks, so buyers focus on the corners and the flap edge, where the grain can rub, and on the handle, which darkens with use.
