The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsHere it is worked in Noir Barenia, the calfskin first made for Hermès saddlery, with Swift completing the bag.
Barenia has a smooth hand and darkens into a patina with use, and Sellier construction with external stitching holds the padded form in a crisp outline. Gold hardware is the warm point against the black.
Collector's Insight:
The Padded Kelly has been made in small runs, and Barenia's softness makes it harder to work in the rigid Sellier format than stiffer leathers like Epsom.
Resale Insight:
Barenia shows water marks and scratches readily, so buyers check the raised panels, where the padding takes the most contact, along with the corners and handle.
